BIG RAPIDS—The hot shooting Baldwin boys basketball Panthers came to Big Rapids on Wednesday night, and they did not disappoint their fans.
Sitting at 15-1 on the season, the Baldwin Panthers are one of the best shooting teams in the area. Led by strong shooting by Carmelo Lindsey and SJ Hossler, alongside a strong inside presence by Louie Jackson, the Baldwin Panthers are ranked No. 7 in the state in Division 4 with six regular season games to go.
"We don't really talk about that to be honest with you." Baldwin coach JJ Eads said on if there's any pressure with being ranked. "We just talk about playing hard every night and playing to our level of expectations. We don't talk about rankings, we do talk about trying to win the league. We want to compete in non-conference games to get us ready for districts. Our big focus is trying to get better every day, especially on the defensive end."
The strong shooting would continue on Wednesday night for the Panthers. One day after beating Traverse City Christian 54-44, the Panthers would top Big Rapids Crossroads 63-19.
On the night against Crossroads, Louie Jackson would lead the Panthers in scoring with 12 points alongside Javon Hawkins. Carmelo Lindsey scored 11 points. The Panthers played part of their JV team on the night and had eight players score points.
Crossroads was improved on offense as well, nearly tripling its point total. This was started by Keegan Carnes, who scored the game's opening basket on a 3-pointer to give CCA a 3-0 lead. Carnes had six points while Donny Guernsey scored 11 points on the evening.
"I think we can be more consistent on our outside shooting. We can handle the ball a little better," Eads said. "I thought early on in the year our turnovers were a little higher. Tonight we were a little sloppy but that was kind of expected after playing last night. It was effort on every possession and just making the simple plays. I just think we have to lock in for 32 minutes. Too often we have games where we have a few minutes getting eaten up."
