Turkey hunting contest set in Baldwin

BALDWIN — The Lake County Sportman's Club is sponsoring a turkey hunting contest starting with the upcoming season.

Forms for the contest are available at King's Sports Center and Ed's Sports Shop in Baldwin. They will also be available at lakecountysportsmansclub.com.

“At the end of the contest, we will determine the winner,” said sportsman's club member and treasurer Greg Nichols. “The winner will be determined by spur length, bird weight and beard length. Those will be totaled up and the winner will be based on the total of the three.”

Contest rules are on the form. There will a $100 gift certificates for first places, $50 gift certificate for second place and $25 for third place. Hunters will be able to redeem those certificates at the following places: Ed's Sports Shop, Kings Sports Center, Baldwin Bait & Tackle, Baldwin Orvis Shop and Ace Hardware.

Various turkey hunting seasons start from April 23 and go through the end of May. That's how long the contest will last.

Meeting dates are at 10 a.m. the first and third Saturday of the month at the Pleasant Plains Township Hall.

The club is also promoting a 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training Workshop. Training session include rifle shotgun, archery and hunting and wildlife will be offered at the workshop. The club's website states that participants will learn how to foster positive youth development through the shooting sports and how techniques can be used to effectively help youth learn safe and proper use of guns and archery equipment.
