Track teams start practices

BALDWIN — Bob Watkins and Scott Pedigo return as track coaches for Baldwin teams that started practices last week.

Right now, the coaches are getting their athletes in shape and seeing who can do what in various events.

Makayla George is back as a senior, although she’s nursing a knee injury. Diamond Cannon also will look to be in the sprints and other events.

Maleke Palmer will be in the throws in his senior season. Brandon Beane did high jump last year and has improved his strength. Blake Dockery will be in the long jump and relays.

There’s are other possible candidates who could join the team.

“We use a timeline from our regional, the third week in May and start working our way back,” Watkins said. “We look at the qualifying times. We’re at the Saugatuck regional which is tough. Last year, we didn’t send anyone to state, but we did get medals.

“The goal is to get 100 percent participation during league jamborees,” Watkins noted.

“That gives kids an opportunity to practice on a regular track and get some of their speed things done,” he said. “I attended a clinic in Lansing. A Godwin Heights coach has agreed we can bring some kids there. His specialty is long jump and sprints. That will give kids an opportunity for a field trip.”
