Track athletes eager to show their talents

BALDWIN – After several weeks of practice, Baldwin's track team begins action this week to start the 2012 spring season.

The season started on Wednesday with the Brethren Jamboree, featuring West Michigan D League teams. It continues with the Mesick Invitational on Friday and the West Michigan D League jamboree April 25 at Onekama.

“We'll know Wednesday, it will give us a good test of what to expect,” said Baldwin coach Bob Watkins. “Onekama and Bear Lake combine for one team and they dominate because of numbers. We all have our expectations. It's subject to change every year.”

David Crysler, Martel Forest and Andon Ware are among the top boys and Alex Torres and Brittany Grant are among the top girl performers.

The Panthers also have meets at Custer Mason County Eastern on April 27 and May 2. The Great Lakes Invitationals are May 4 at Beal City. Brethren is hosting an invitational May 5 and also is hosting the conference meet May 9.

“There's one week we'll have three meets in a row,” Watkins said. “When we get some times, we can work on those times.”

Watkins noted that he and the other Baldwin coaches, Scott Pedigo and Abe Williams, will probably juggle around the track lineup depending on how the athletes do in various performance.

“We'll see what their strengths are for the regionals,” Watkins said.

The regionals are also set for Brethren May 18 or 19 with qualifiers advancing to the state finals June 2. Baldwin athletes will also see action May 24 at the Pioneer Track meet at Top Taggart Field.
