Panther sophomore eager to have strong softball season

BALDWIN — Kiera Barker posted a strong season as a Baldwin sophomore in volleyball and basketball. Now she’s hoping to do it in again in softball.

Barker was a catcher on last year’s softball team. She’s looking at playing there again this year, but noted the Panthers have a new coach with Doug Bolles.

“He’s more about diversity and having more than one (position),” Barker said. “He’ll probably have me somewhere else like second base.”

As a catcher, Barker said she knows where to keep the ball and what to do with it.

“As a freshman and being my first year of playing the sport, I didn’t know anything,” she said. “I’m still learning.”

Barker said hitting is a strength with both slow and fast pitches.

“Hitting is good for me,” she said.

The season starts at home April 11 with Crossroads. Baldwin is at Walkerville on April 21 and at Brethren April 25. There are also home games April 28 with Manistee Catholic Central and May 9 with Onekama.

“Our team is very diverse,” she said. “We have a lot of people good at one strength and a lot of people better at another. Our team will be set at diversity and knowing what to do.”
