Local gymnast takes honors

LOWELL — Flipstar Gymnastics took 19 competitors to the Winter Classic Gymnastics Invitational at Lowell High School this past weekend, including Kiela Brooks, of Baldwin.

In the platinum division, Flipstar was the Platinum Team champions, and also had two all-around champions in Alex Kovar (37.05) and Brooks (36.6).

“Alex had podium finishes on all events being  the champion on uneven bars (9.05) and floor exercise (9.5) as well as third on vault (9.3) and balance beam (9.2),” coach Aimee Goff said. “Kiela also brought home all podium finishes being the champion on vault (9.6) and floor exercise (9.5), second on uneven bars (8.55) and third on balance beam (8.9).

“I am so proud of these girls. This was another great meet for us. For many of our girls this was their highest score at their current level, several of them bettering their previous high by over a full point, which is a lot for gymnastics. We had Flipstar team high scores at both the platinum and bronze levels. Our girls continue to make great improvements at each meet.”

The team has two meets in February: a home fun meet at Flipstar with a competitive meet followed at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
