BALDWIN — Flipstar Gymnastics, of Ludington, competed in Lowell at the Winter Classic on Jan. 9 with the Xcel Bronze and Xcel Gold teams both taking first place team awards while the Xcel Silver took a third place.

A Baldwin girl played a key role for the team.

The Xcel Gold team champions were led by all-around champions Kiela Brooks (36.45) of Baldwin and Alex Kovar (35.95). They were also both champions on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise with vault scores of 9.0 (Brooks) and 8.7 (Kovar), uneven bars scores of 9.25 (Brooks) and 8.9 (Kovar), and floor exercise scores of 9.65 (Brooks) and 9.55 (Kovar). Brooks was seventh on balance beam (8.55).

This was the first competitive meet for the Xcel Bronze team. Bringing home first place over other much larger teams, was considered a strong accomplishment for this very young group with most of the seven competitors under the age of 8. Five of these bronze girls brought home podium all-around finishes.
