Local girl excels with gymnastics team

BALDWIN  — Flipstar Gymnastics Center’s Xcel Silver, Gold and Platinum gymnasts, including Kiela Brooks of Baldwin, competed at Eastern Michigan University for the Clover Classic Invitational last month

The Xcel Gold Team brought home the second place team trophy out of 13 teams in this session.

Alexandria Kovar led the way with her first place all-around finish with a score of 36.825. Alex was also the champion on floor exercise (9.35), second on vault (9.2), fifth on uneven bars (9.425) and eighth on balance beam (8.85).

Brooks was also the all-around (36.525) and floor exercise (9.3) champion in her age division as well as fourth on vault (8.95) and sixth on balance beam (8.875). Twins Julia and Jessica Gutowski also had podium finishes in the all-around with Julia’s second place (36.55) and Jessica’s third place (36.5). Julia was also the champion on uneven bars (9.675) and eighth on vault (9.025) and floor exercise (9.05). Jessica also brought home medals for fourth on vault (9.1), sixth on uneven bars (9.45) and seventh on balance beam (8.85) and floor exercise (9.1).

“It was a great meet for all of our girls,” a Flipstar spokesperson said. “There was a lot of tough competition at this meet with some of the top teams in the state competing. This was great as this was our last meet before our state competition, which is at the beginning of April, so it really helped us prepare and see where we fall and what things need to be tweaked before that state competition. Our Xcel Gold Team worked hard for their second place team finish in yet another meet where they beat out teams of over twice their size.

“There was a second Xcel Gold session of this meet the following day and our Xcel Gold team score would have brought home the first-place award in that session. Everyone of our Gold competitors had at least one of their event scores count toward the three score on each event that comprise the team score. These girls really complement each other as a team with the various strengths. They are such a tight group and really root for each other despite the fact that many are often in the same age division therefore competing against each other for individual awards.”
