Kane sets his goals high for track season

BALDWIN — Demetrius Kane returns for another year with Baldwin’s track team and with high hopes for a productive season.

Last spring, Kane ran the 100-meter dash, long jump and sprint relays.

His best time in the 100 dash was 11.6. He hopes to get it down to 11.1 this season.

“I need a better start, more weight-lifting, working on my legs,” Kane said.

He likes the Panthers’ potential in the sprint relays.

The long jump will also be on Kane’s agenda. He’s looking to get in the high teens this season.

“I need to hit the board well and have a good form,” he said, adding that the poor weather that has confined the Panthers to most of their practices indoors will not necessarily be a major hindrance. “I’ve had weight training first hour. That helps with my legs.”

Kane hopes to complement his track skills in other sports. He also plays football in the fall and basketball in the winter.

For track, Kane and his teammates hope to keep improving and perhaps qualify at the regionals for the state finals.

The Panthers are scheduled to be at West Michigan D League jamborees April 23 at Onekama, April 30 at Brethren and May 7 at Custer-Mason County Eastern. The conference meet is May 21 at MCE. Medal meets are set for April 26 at Mesick, May 2 at Beal City and May 3 at Brethren. The regionals are May 16 or 17 at Saugatuck.
