Golf club having busy summer so far

BALDWIN  — Action has been picking up at Marquette Trails Golf Club in recent weeks.

A major event was Sunday with the Lake County Habitat for Humanity Blessing of the Clubs. The event was rained out Friday and made up on Sunday. The group of Bud and Craig Davis and Stan Dunahoo was first at 61 while Larry and Arlene Treece, Diane Clark and Roger Blanton were second at 63.

The leading seniors group consisted of Sam Barnette, Paul Stevens, Jim Nelson and Russ Broderick with a 65. The top women’s team was Deb Russell, Diana Hipshire, Lori Braginton and Linda Kreidler with an 82.

Chris Balulis, golf club owner, noted that the Ted and Dale Memorial earlier this spring “was a great success” with 120 players and raised more than $6,000 for local charities and two scholarships.

Ted Pettengil was a local business owner and Dale Jones was a former golf pro.

Also coming up is the inaugural Rick Simonson Memorial Golf Outing, sponsored by the Big Star Lake Association on July 13. It’s a four-person best ball scramble that has an 8:30 a.m. shot gun start. Additional proceeds from the event go to the Baldwin Promise Foundation in Simonson’s memory. Entry forms are available at the course.

The Knights of Columbus, on July 26, has a four-man scramble set for 8 a.m. The proceeds go to the St. Ann’s meals program.  On Sept. 12, Baldwin Rotary has a three-man scramble with proceeds going to the Strive Scholarship program.

The course has four weekly leagues this season. A Tuesday morning seniors league is featured along with a Tuesday after 5 ladies league. Men’s leagues are on Wednesday and Thursday.

“We have a lot of club events,” Baluilis said. “They can be found on our website.”
