Getting off to a promising start

BALDWIN — Lake County Sportsman's Club has the father-and-son combination of Greg Nichols Sr. and Greg Nichols Jr. to help it get off to a promising start.

Nichols Sr. is a retired Baldwin resident and is 67 and has lived in the area most of his life. He's been helping out with the newly formed sportsman's club.

“We'll have to buy some land,” he said.

He enjoys hunting but especially the season that is now coming up.

“I like turkey hunting the best,” he said. “It's a wonderful sport. It's a challenge to see what you can call in. It's kind of a sport you can do all by yourself. I figure if I can call them in that close, I can probably take a picture.”

Nichols Sr. remembers shooting a turkey with a 10-inch beard that weighed around 23 pounds. Most of his hunting is in the area. He also enjoys small game hunting, including rabbits and squirrels, along with birds.

Nichols Sr. indicated that his entire family, including his grandchildren, is involved in deer hunting.

“We've tried to push the youth portion of this,” he said. “If you don't bring the youth into it, pretty soon there's nothing left for the old people. You have to keep bringing them along.”

Nichols recalls shooting an 8-point buck as among his top accomplishments.

He also enjoys fishing, especially the Baldwin River, for brown trout. He fishes the local lakes for bluegills.

Ice fishing was sparse. This past winter, “the ice was not good,” he said. “It kind of went back and forth. It looked like it was going to be good then it warmed up and that was the end of that. I didn't see much going on and I didn't get my stuff out. We have a lot of lakes in Lake County and it's usually pretty good.”

Open water fishing will keep Nichols busy.

“There's still good opportunities. I don't think it's as good, depending on how far you want to go back,” Nichols said. “I know the deer hunting population is down. Insurance companies seem to be managing the deer herd for us.”

But Nichols acknowledges to have had good success with his turkey hunting.

“I know they say the numbers are down,” he said. “But I've managed to do pretty well the last few years.”
