George receives league honors for softball season

BALDWIN — Makayla George recently finished a strong sophomore sports season for the Baldwin Panthers.

She was among the volleyball players in the fall and basketball players in the winter. George recently earned softball honors. She was a second team member of the West Michigan D League all-conference squad. George received her honors as an infielder. She also was a pitcher.

She also performed in track and qualified for the Pioneer Track & Field championships at Ferris State University. This summer, George is working on her basketball game and has been at the Grand Valley camp.

In softball, George batted around .500. Her all-league honors “were more for her batting,” said Baldwin coach Bob Hilts.

George also had a home run and two triples, plus four doubles.

Hilts saw significant improvement in George from her sophomore season. He wants to see it in 2015 also.

“We’re expecting a lot out of her,” Hilts said. “She’s one of the best athletes out there. We’ll be depending on her.”

George will be on the varsity volleyball team in the fall. Hilts said he’ll continue to be the junior varsity volleyball coach. He and athletic director Shawn Williams confirmed that the school is currently looking for a new varsity volleyball coach.

Williams indicated there might be camps for the volleyball players in the summer. The season will begin with practices in mid-August, followed by a regular slate of games.
