Former Baldwin girl athlete enjoys basketball life at MCC

BALDWIN  — Alex Torres was a talented three-sport athlete at Baldwin and she continues to display her basketball skills at Muskegon Community College.

Torres has been slated to work with the Baldwin basketball team during the summer discussing the high school to college transition.

She’s waiting to finish her current studies at MCC next month.

“Shawn Williams (athletic director) and I are going to do a little camp for the girls,” Torres said. “He wants me to talk to them. I’ve gone to college and played. He wants me to tell them about my experiences of going to college. I’ll come up there and teach them a little bit about basketball and tell stories about my college experiences of basketball.”

Her MCC team also will be doing camps for various high schools.

Torres played as a freshman for the 2012-13 season at MCC. She redshirted last season and has one year of eligibility remaining.

“The first year, it was amazing,” she said. “It’s so different than high school. I was a little afraid of it. I got used to it. Basketball comes really natural to me.”

Torres also enjoyed the chance to bond with her teammates.

“I just loved it,” she said.

Torres will be at guard for her college team. She indicated that she has improved from her freshman to sophomore season.

“There’s a lot more to it,” she said. “I know a lot more.”
