BALDWIN – Inland lake fishing is at a standstill with lack of safe ice. But river fishing continues to be productive, especially at the Pere Marquette River.

A spokesperson at the Pere Marquette River Lodge said fishing continues in spite of the weather.

“I do know they’re fishing and I know they’re landing some beautiful steelhead,” she said.

The Shiver on the River tournament was scheduled for last weekend.

“This year I think we’re having a little smaller group because we didn’t have it the last couple of  years with COVID,” the spokesperson said. “I would say we were expecting up to 20 this year. We’re just now bringing it back. It’s a weekend so we’ve had guests checking in for fishing on Saturday and Sunday.”

Jake McMillon, at Baldwin Bait & Tackle reported “things have been good. There’s not much ice fishing going on due to the weather and lack of good ice. But fishing on the river has been good.”

Steelhead and resident trout have been the targets.

“There’s some steelhead that come up the fall after the salmon and those fish stay here all winter and that’s what we’re catching now,” McMillon said. “Depending on water temps, the big run is either March or April when most of them come up to spawn.”
