BIG RAPIDS – It was a fun time to be a hunter in the spring and now is a decent time to be an angler.
That’s the word from rural Paris resident and host of TV’s Wilderness Journal, Kyle Randall.
“There’s not too much hunting going on as turkey season closed up the first of the month,” he said. “I will say that it was fairly successful. The fishing is in full swing. It’s been a little strange with protracted cold and then extreme heat, which has put us into almost summertime opportunities.
“The smallmouth fishing is still quite good. The bluegills are on their beds in the smaller lakes. There’s certainly a lot of largemouth fishing and some nice catches coming in. On the big lake, the guys are having to go out a ways and are catching numbers of lake trout and also some really nice salmon.”
Randall said he saw a picture on Thursday of three kings weighing more than 30 pounds.
“The fishing is good,” he said. “The water is warming up quite quickly. Trout fishing is starting to tail off sooner than normal. Inland lakes, rivers and streams are all in pretty fine spring fashion. Most people are having good catches.
“I think we could benefit from more moderate temperatures. We can use more rain. Water levels are down and boaters have to aware of that. It’s a little different this year.”
