Cruising to victory

Baldwin has no trouble in defeating Walkerville

BALDWIN — Baldwin is 4-0 but the Panthers expect to face their toughest opponents in upcoming weeks.

Karlos Perez scored 14 points while Andon Ware added 11 to lead Baldwin to a 64-14 West Michigan D League boys basketball victory over Walkerville Tuesday night.

The Panthers are home against league power Custer Mason-County Eastern on Friday night.

“I told the kids enjoy the win, you're 4-0,” said Baldwin coach Scott Pedigo. “Just remember, Friday will probably be the best team you've seen so far during the season. Each night from here on out will be like that.”

MCE, Pedigo added, “they live and die by the 3-point shot. They're somewhat methodical at some point. They'll work their offense to get a shot. They like to kick it out for a three. If the 3-ball goes, they're a tough team. We have to build on it and improve. This is a stepping stone.”

Tuesday, it was no contest from the beginning. Perez scored five points and Martel Forest and Devon Sparks-Burrell added four apiece to lead Baldwin to a 17-1 first-period lead.

Walkerville didn't score until Baldwin had already built a 13-0 lead. It was 23-1 before Walkerville scored its first field goal at 5:36 of the second quarter.

Ware had seven points, including a three, in the second quarter and Baldwin led 38-7 at halftime.

The Panthers held Walkerville to two points in the third quarter and Baldwin led 52-9 going into the fourth. Daekwon Fisher netted six points to lead the Panthers in the third quarter.

“It was one of those games where it's nice when you come back from a two-week break,” Pedigo said. “We've been scrimmaging and things like that. It was a game when I wish we could have played all the kids. We had a few that had to sit out because they didn't practice.

“My emphasis was on our defense. I didn't care about our offense. I knew offensively we could do things here that were probably not very sound and still score. I wanted to have them playing good defense. I was happy at times. They did miss some easy shots. I'm OK with it.”

Baldwin improves to 3-0 in the league. Walkerville is 0-4 overall.

“It's been more team oriented,” Sparks-Burrell said. “If someone is not setting screens to get someone open we stop and tell him what to do to get that person open. It's everyone working as one.”

Against MCE, “they shoot a lot of threes,” Sparks-Burrell said. “I feel if we guard the perimeters and box out, we should be all right.”
