BALDWIN — Brandon Chldress has received all-conference honors for the West Michigan D League for the 2013 baseball season.

Childress, a pitcher and center fielder, batted close to .500 and was among the top pitchers on the Baldwin team for coach Doug Bolles.

Childress is a sophomore who made first-team honors.

“It was an outstanding season for a sophomore,” said Bolles. “Last year, he was a freshman and was second-team all-conference. His stats were even better. We didn’t have a glowing record but we improved and were competitive in every game. That was in large part due to him. He has great leadership He’s great in the classroom at 3.9. He’s an all-around gifted athlete and came to play every day.”

Alan Clugston, a sophomore infielder and pitcher, was honorable mention all-conference.

“The thing that hurt Alan in not getting higher in conference was that his batting in the league was only .250, Bolles said. “Overall, he batted around .356. League wise he didn’t do as well. He and Brandon are right there. He played outfield, he played third base and shortstop. He’s versatile. He struggled a little early but came out strong.”

Bolles is now focusing on his football coaching duties.

Football players lift Monday and Wednesday night and Tuesday and Thursday morning.

After a dead week, they’ll go Monday through Thursday night in the weight room and have some conditioning.

Bolles said none of his players that he’s aware of will be playing summer baseball, mainly since they’re tied in with basketball during June and football after that.

“When baseball gets over with, not too many pick up a glove until the next baseball season,” Bolles said. “That’s the down part over here.”
