Baldwin volleyball team makes debut next week
BALDWIN — A new volleyball season starts for coach Duane Roberts and his Baldwin Panthers on Aug. 31 when they play at the Buckley Bear Invitational.
Baldwin will be at the McBain Northern Michigan Christian Invitational on Sept. 7 and will be at Bear Lake on Sept. 12 to open the West Michigan D League season.
Following the Pentwater Falcon Invitational on Sept. 16, Baldwin has its home opener on Sept. 19 against Pentwater.
The Panthers were at a West Michigan Whitecaps game earlier this week for team bonding purposes. Practices were set to be back in session on 5 p.m. Wednesday of this week.
Roberts was hopeful of getting a scrimmage set up prior to the first match.
Top players for the Panthers include Riley Drilling, Mariah Sowle, Jenna Johnson and April and Ally See, plus for the sixth spot, Alexus Pieske, a returning player, for Rikeshia Simpson.
“Serves have been looking phenomenal right now,” Roberts said. “They’ve been playing a good defensive game. I have girls who aren’t afraid to step up and return the ball and make the plays as much as possible.”
Other home matches for Baldwin are on Sept. 21 against Muskegon Heights, on Sept. 28 against Mason County Eastern, on Oct. 5 against Walkerville, on Oct. 12 against the Traverse City Bulldogs, on Oct. 14 in the conference tournament and on Oct. 19 against Evart.
Baldwin also will be at Brethren on Sept 26, at Big Rapids Crossroads on Oct. 3 and at Manistee Catholic Central on Oct. 10.
