Baldwin volleyball team eyes season opener

BALDWIN — Baldwin’s volleyball team has been practicing since Aug. 9 but is still waiting for its first match.

Coach Duane Roberts said his team was scheduled to play at the Buckley Bear invitational on Thursday. But the invitational was switched to a different date.

“We didn’t find out until it was too late that our match had been changed to the day before,” Roberts said.

The season opener will be Thursday at the McBain Northern Michigan Invitational. Pine River and NMC are among the teams scheduled to be there.

Key players for Baldwin will be twin sisters April and Ally See, Mariah Sowle, Jenna Johnson, Riley Drilling, Alexis Pieske and Rikesha Simpson.

“The girls will do OK,” Roberts said. “It’s just that we haven’t played too many people outside of ourselves.”

Baldwin plays at Bear Lake on Sept. 12 for the West Michigan D League opener, followed by the Pentwater Falcon Invitational on Sept. 16. The first home matches are Sept 19 against Pentwater and Sept. 21 against Muskegon Heights.
