BALDWIN - Baldwin volleyball coach Duane Roberts continues to make plans for his summer program.

"We've started an elementary school volleyball program this summer, then we're going to be looking into this next year to see if we'll have schools we can play," Roberts said. "The varsity will start after our dead week which ends July 6. We will start JV and varsity practices after that. I'm looking forward to being back in the gym with most of my returners.

"I lost two players due to graduation. I'm probably gaining another two to three players. We're preparing to host the districts for the first time in awhile. It will be most of the West Michigan D League which is here with Onekama coming in as well."

Districts are the first week of November.

The MHSAA made a change so that all sports start official practices the same day, the second Monday in August, as football.

"I'm all right with that," Roberts said.

In the past, volleyball and other sports have started the Wednesday after football begins. All sports will now start Aug. 9.

"I'm going to be geared up to get kids in here especially two days before the first day of school," Roberts said. "I'm looking forward to getting them back in the gym and getting them ready to go. From Aug. 1 to the beginning of the season will be another dead period."

Roberts said he will have a junior varsity team and is currently looking for a middle school coach.
