BALDWIN – The outdoor track and field season ended recently for Baldwin coach Robert Watkins, who has seen many outstanding championship athletes in his career.

Ira Childress, Shawn Williams and Kenny Coleman come to mind as being three of the best.

All three were sprinters.

“Kenny Coleman, although he won the state finals in the long jump, he also won the 400 open,” Watkins said. “Shawn and Ira were both on the same relay team and both were sprinters and long jumpers. They all qualified for state their senior year.”

Childress and Williams were in the same grade while Coleman was younger.

All three were also standouts in other sports.

Coleman got a track scholarship to Grand Valley. Childress and Williams also had scholarships in football.

Williams eventually became athletic director at Baldwin. He currently is an assistant coach for Watkins with the football team and with JJ Eads for the boys basketball team.

Williams was also boys junior varsity basketball coach.
