Baldwin track athletes prepare for regionals

BALDWIN — It’s less than two weeks when Baldwin’s track athletes will compete in the Division 4 regionals and coaches Scott Pedigo, Bob Watkins and Abe Williams are working with the Panthers to get them ready for some key meets.

Baldwin recently competed in an invitational at Beal City. The 400-meter relay team of Aaron Thomas, Andon Ware, Martel Forest and Daruist Forest took first place. Andon Ware and David Crysler were third and fifth in the long jump.

Thomas was sixth in the 200.

For the girls, Alex Torres, Kirsten DeFrece, Britney Grant and Ashley Roy were third in the 400-meter relay. Torres was third in the long jump.

“A lot of our kids did well at Beal City,” Watkins said. “The most glaring issue I had is we didn’t have strong finishes in some of the bigger races. We will focus on our conditioning and building their muscles. Being we have an extra week (prior to regionals) is a plus for us.”

The Panthers are competing May 21 in the Division 4 regionals at Brethren. The top two finishers in each event, plus those that meet or surpass a certain qualifying standards.

“We’ve run up against everyone in our regional one time or another,” Watkins said. “We have a good measuring tool to determine what our chances are.”

Watkins is confident there are some Baldwin athletes that can qualify for the finals.

Baldwin has a jamboree next Tuesday prior to the regionals.
