Baldwin to see action in new football league

BALDWIN — Baldwin sports teams will see some interesting wrinkles in the future with league affiliations.

While talking about the Baldwin basketball program earlier this month, athletic director Shawn Williams noted that the players would be attending a game at Mesick.

“That will be good because they’ll be joining our conference in 2015-16,” Williams said, referring to the West Michigan D League.

Mesick has been on the non-league schedule for Baldwin football. But because many of the West Michigan D League schools don’t have football, Williams noted a new conference has been formed for that sport, starting this fall.

The Northwest Six consists of Baldwin, Brethren, Manistee Catholic, Mesick, Onekama and Traverse City Christian. Mesick and TC Christian are new to the league. The others were a part of the West Michigan D League’s football division.

Baldwin was scheduled to play at Okemos for summer league basketball work.

Also coming up will be a girls basketball clinic on July 22 featuring James Brumfield of Traverse City, who was at Baldwin in mid-June featuring individual and team skills. Chucky Brooks will do a fundamentals camp, assisted by Baldwin coaches, on July 24.

The coaching staff will also do a camp July 29 to cap off the summer program for sports.

Aug. 11 is the first day of practice for volleyball and football. Open gyms are also taking place Tuesdays and Thursdays. Williams was hoping for a summer basketball league but said those plans have to be put on hold for a year while the gym floor is being redone.
