BALDWIN — Weniesha Newman is among the two Baldwin seniors looking to make key contributions for the softball team this season.

The Panthers have been practicing since March 9.

“I might do outfield, but I don’t know what (coach Bob Hilts) has in store for me,” Newman said, adding that her best position is outfield. “I have a good throw and I can throw far.”

Newman is confident of making contact on a consistent basis. She’s looking forward to getting more at-bats as the season progresses.

The Panthers play at Crossroads Monday and Newman agreed her teammates need to get in some game time, especially at the plate.

“You have to keep your eye on the ball and follow through,” Newman said.

The Panthers have 20 players on the roster.

“We’re looking better than we did last year,” Newman said.

Newman and Miranda Roberts are the only two seniors and there is some experience on the team. Newer players, including Diamond Cannon and Kiera Barker, are looking strong, Newman noted.
