Panthers wrap up season

BALDWIN -- The Baldwin Middle School Track team ended its regular season on a high note by participating in two track meets within the last week. Marcus Martin (15-4.5) and Khole Toliver (13’ 3.5) jumped their personal best placing them in first place in the long jump at the Marion Jamboree last Monday May 2.

Martin also placed second in the 70-meter and 100-meter dash. Chance Dockery placed sixth in the 70 meter dash, fifth in the 100 meter dash and sixth in the long jump.

On the girls side, in addition to finishing first in the long jump, Toliver finished fourth in the 70 meter dash. Monica Perfitt placed 11th in the 70 meter dash and fifth in the shot put.

On Monday, the Baldwin middle school track team traveled to Brethren to compete in the West Michigan D Conference meet.

“Upon arriving at the meet at Brethren, Marcus shared with me his goal was to place first in every event he was scheduled to participate in,“ stated Co-Coach Abe Williams, “and he did it.” Marcus took first in the long jump, with a jump of 16-2. He took first in the 70- meter dash and the 100-meter dash. All are personal best records for him. Chance Dockery finished seventh in the long jump, fifth in the 70-meter dash and fifth in the 100 meter dash.

While nursing a bruised shoulder, Khole Toliver was still successful at the conference meet. She placed third in the long jump and the 100-meter dash. Khole finished fourth in the 70-meter dash after her heat was delayed by a timing malfunction.

“She was in first place in the top and last heat when they stopped the race because the clock stopped working; it took them about 15 minutes to fix it and she lost her momentum,” said co-coach Yvonne Williams.

Monica Perfitt finished seventh in the shot put and the 70 meter dash and 14th in the 100 meter dash. Jerika Mabrey finish 14th in the shot put, 10th in the 70 meter dash and 13th in the 100 meter dash. This was the girls first time competing in the 100-meter dash and they all finished strong. The girls 4x100 relay team did not compete again due to not having enough participants.
