BALDWIN —  McKayla Higbee will be among the Baldwin softball players trying a new position this season.

“Last year I played second, but this year I’ll play a little bit of catcher,” she said. “I’m excited. I can’t wait. It’s a different position and is something new for me to learn.”

Higbee, also a volleyball player, considers herself to be more than capable of keeping the ball in front of her on every pitch.

“If the ball hits me, I’m not afraid of it,” she said. “My arm is pretty good this year.”

Higbee, a junior, likes the potential of the pitching staff.

“We’re getting a lot better in consistency with strikes,”  she said. Higbee said she’ll have to work on her confidence in the batter’s box.

Game action, she said, will be critical for everyone to get better. Poor spring weather canceled many games for the team last season.

“We just need more experience,” she said.

Baldwin opens the season at Crossroads on Monday. The team will play in the West Michigan D League and has several nonconference games on the agenda.
