Baldwin girls end regular season with victory over Pentwater

PENTWATER — Baldwin ended the regular season with a 45-42 win over Pentwater on Thursday in West Michigan D League action, prior to losing its district opener on Monday.

Baldwin came back despite being down 16-4 in the first quarter and 32-20 late in the third. It was 32-30 going into the fourth.

Sophomore Diamond Cannon led with 16 points and freshman Amani Freeman added 14 points. Freeman had 13 rebounds while Cannon added 12.

Kiera Barker added six points, five assists and four steals for Baldwin.

Junior Linea McDonough scored a game high 27 points including six 3-pointers for Pentwater.

Baldwin (4-15, 2-14) played in the Class D districts on Monday in Walkerville against Manistee Catholic Central and ended its season at 4-16 with a 38-25 loss. MCC was up 6-4 after the first quarter, 16-9 at halftime and 24-15 after the third quarter. MCC had a 14-10 advantage in the fourth.

MCC made nine field goals, three 3-point baskets and were 11-of-29 from the free- throw line. Baldwin netted eight field goals and was 9-of-18 from the free throw line.

“We played good defense all night but just couldn’t get many shots to fall on offense,” Baldwin coach Doug Bolles said. “That’s been our Achilles heel all season.”

Cannon led Baldwin with nine points, followed by Amani Freeman with eight.

Meghan Miller and Jodi Janoviak each had 10 points to lead MCC.

MCC moved on to face Mason County Eastern in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Pentwater defeated host Walkerville and moved on to the semifinal to face Brethren.
