BALDWIN — Too many injuries and not enough numbers has forced the Baldwin football program to end its 8-player season prematurely.

Coach Bob Watkins said the team forfeited its games last Friday with Brethren and this Friday with Onekama.

The Panthers officially end at 0-8. The last game was a 21-6 loss to Crossroads on Oct. 6.

“We came into the week thinking we’d have 11 players,” Watkins said. “There were two injuries we didn’t know about until Tuesday. Our quarterback (Jesse Pancio) had bruised ribs. Then we lost a kid to eligibility. We looked at it and saw we had eight players with no reserves.

“We didn’t feel comfortable with no reserves. That’s when we made the decision to cancel. Next week, a couple of parents were taking their kids out of town with this being inter-session week. We lose two kids. Then you don’t know if the injuries would get better.”

Watkins is looking forward to having more than enough numbers for a team next season.
