Baldwin football building for 2018
BALDWIN — Bob Watkins has coached football 40 years at Baldwin and the last two as head skipper of an 8-player team.
This was a challenging year with a 0-8 record and a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores. Baldwin scored only six points all season.
“We knew last year that this year would be a challenge with only returning three starters,” Watkins said. “However, before the season got started we lost our superintendent, AD, starting QB and two linemen. With the superintendent and AD gone, we were locked out till after the new ones were hired, so we didn’t get approved until a week before the season opened.
“We were a real young team and it showed. Being as young as we were, we had one senior, who was a first-year player, one junior, four sophomores and four freshmen.”
Top players were junior Darrion Hayter, sophomore Ian Lemieux and freshman Jesse Pancio.
“Next year should be a lot better,” Watkins said. “We will have a JV team.”
The Crossroads Cougars swept Baldwin in the first round of districts on Monday at Custer Mason County Eastern 25-21, 25-15, 25-21.
The season ended for Baldwin.
'My girls came out playing their hearts out," Panther coach Duane Roberts said. "We had to adapt to lower ceiling height and a shorter width of the court. My ladies gave their all and then some on the court. I will miss my seniors and would like to thank my players, their families, the community and the Baldwin Community School District for the ability to coach again this year. Our scores show that not only can we compete but that we are improving year in and out. Our biggest wins were on the personal and team growth level. Timing attacks, serves, facing fears, adjusting to a new coaching style, and ultimately personal growth with life lessons.
"Not only did our team make strides in improvement on the court but also in their own life. As we had a final break after the game we were all emotional and spoke of our personal growths. I would like to extend one last huge thanks to my players and my seniors. Kendre Speer , Mariah Sowle, and Jazlynn Johnson. captain of our team."
