BALDWIN – For the fourth straight season, Baldwin will not be having varsity girls basketball.

Coach Nikki Bergman made the announcement last week. She had said earlier this month she anticipated having a single team, but didn’t know if it would be a varsity or JV team. Practices had started on Nov. 8.

On Friday, Bergman announced the girls program was being canceled.

“We don't have enough players to maintain a team,” she said.

Previously in providing a preseason outlook, Bergman not only anticipated having a team but was hoping for various successes.

“We have a small number of players, but they are eager to get on the court and play,” Bergman said earlier this month. “Not having a season last year was a blow to us mentally and developmentally. Missing that opportunity to play was tough on some kids and they want to make up for lost time. We’re going to spend a lot of time on fundamentals and build a base of skills that when combined with the right attitudes, will allow us to compete on the court.”The challenge we may face is keeping everyone healthy and available to play. Our defense needs to be our calling card for us to be successful. Luckily, I have a defensive minded group, so I think we can do some good things on that end of the floor to spark us on the offensive side.”
Prior to the cancellation of the season, Bergman cited what she felt would be a team strength.

“I think this team’s strength is going to be the defensive end of the floor,” she said. “For the first time in my career, I have had players ask for more defensive shuffling drills, so I think it’s fair to say that they see that as their team identity and strength. As a group, they’re pretty eager to learn which is a strength because it will allow us to put in more systems, hopefully at a pretty fast pace.

“We’re looking to improve on shooting and ball handling fundamentals on a daily basis. I think we need to improve on our ability to create our own shots and scoring opportunities. We need to learn more about the game of basketball and get the playing and game experience that a lot of us lack.”

Baldwin had a lack of numbers for the 2018-19 season and canceled it. There was a JV team for 2019-20. It had been anticipated there would be a 2020-21 campaign but it was canceled for lack of numbers.
