Baldwin boys open season next week at Pentwater

BALDWIN  — Baldwin’s boys basketball team is ready to unveil its 2015-16 squad when the Panthers tip off next week.

The Panthers have a busy opening week. They are at Pentwater on Tuesday and home with Walkerville on Dec. 10. They also play at Muskegon Heights Dec. 11.

Prior to the holiday break, Baldwin is home on Dec. 15 with Mason County Eastern and at Onekama on Dec. 17.

Baldwin is defending West Michigan D League and Class D district champions. But the Panthers are playing without some key players from last season, including Class D Player of the Year Brandon Childress, who has graduated. His two younger brothers, Braeden and Brenton, have transferred to Big Rapids.

Kevin Dillard returns for his second year as coach and is hopeful of having the talent necessary to be a contender in the West Michigan D League.

“Da’Ron Copeland is looking strong for me,” Dillard said of a returning senior. “Blake Dockery will also be a scorer for our team and Deondra McDonald will be big for our team’s success. Brandon Beane is coming along. He will be a great asset.”

Copeland and Beane are returning seniors. McDonald, a junior, saw some varsity action last year. Dockery is up from the JV squad.

“We have a lot of young guys that will fill in nicely,” Dillard said.

Dillard indicated no scrimmages have yet been scheduled prior to opening the season.

“But we will be ready for our first game at Pentwater,” Dillard said.
