Baldwin boys open districts with huge win over MCE

BALDWIN — Baldwin’s boys basketball team is pursuing its fourth straight Class D district crown this week and got off to a good start on Monday with a 75-51 victory over Mason County Eastern at Manistee Catholic Central.

Baldwin led 14-8 after the first quarter 27-20 at halftime and 53-32 after the third quarter. Baldwin had a 22-19 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

“We came out a little nervous and the game was close,” Baldwin coach Kevin Dillard said. “We came out red hot in the third and played our type of defense, which helped us pull away from them.”

Da’Ron Copeland and Deondra McDonald scored 18 points apiece for Baldwin while Blake Dockery had 11 and Ahmad Goram added seven.

“We are still a work in progress but we are on a mission to get that district championship,” Dillard said. “I’m happy that my other two starters are starting to contribute to the offense.”

On Wednesday, the Panthers played the host school, and the winner would advance to Friday’s title game at MCC.

The regional semifinal game is March 14 and the finals on March 16 at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
