BALDWIN — Baldwin’s boys basketball team entered the holiday season with a West Michigan D League victory.

The Panthers improved to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference with a 51-38 road victory over Custer Mason County Eastern on Dec. 19.

Baldwin had a 9-7 lead after the first quarter. It was 22-19 at halftime and 30-26 after the third quarter.

Ryan Kolenbrander scored 14 points for Baldwin, Andre Hobbs had 10, Bryce Masterman had seven, Dexter Hossler six, Darrion Hayter five, DeMarko Williams four, Ian Lemieux three and Isaiah Defreece had two.

“It was a close game for awhile,” Baldwin coach Bob Watkins said. “We had a lot of opportunity to pull away. We started to put pressure on them and had a lot of steals. Ryan did an excellent job of getting the steals. DeMarko came in and basically controlled the boards. Toward the end, everyone was hitting their free throws, an area we had been weak in.

“We have to cut down on turnovers. Turnovers killed us or else it would have been a blowout.”

Baldwin is home on Jan. 4 against Mesick in league action. The Panthers also have home games on Jan. 11 with Brethren, on Jan. 18 with Bear Lake and on Jan. 22 with Pentwater.
