Baldwin baseball team takes pair from Walkerville

BALDWIN — Baldwin’s baseball team had a big day Thursday with 18-1 and 18-2 West Michigan D League victories over Walkerville at home

“It was good for us to get a chance to get in league and get a couple of wins and feel good about ourselves,” Baldwin coach Doug Bolles said. “We’ve turned the corner a little bit.”

Maverick Fisher was the winning pitcher in the first game, going three innings, striking out four and walking five. He allowed two hits. He had two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs. Damon Nichols had two singles. Walkerville pitchers allowed 12 walks and hit three batters.

Tyler Clugston was the winning pitcher in the second game. Nichols got the save.

Clugston had two hits and six RBIs, with four on a grand-slam. Fisher had three hits and four RBI. Nichols added three singles.

A doubleheader scheduled for Monday at Onekama was rained out and rescheduled for May 21. Baldwin is home Thursday against Mason County Eastern.

Baldwin (3-7) has won three straight and is 2-4 in the league.

“We’re coming around,” Bolles said. “We have a lot of young guys. Our numbers are tight. They’re battling every day. I’m happy with the outcome and the effort. They’re starting to bond a little bit and back each other up so that’s pretty fun.”

The Division 4 districts will be the last week of the month at Holton.
