Baldwin baseball team loses pair

BALDWIN — It was all Manistee Catholic Central in the opener of a West Michigan D League baseball doubleheader at Baldwin on Monday with a 20-4 victory in five innings.

But the Sabers had to overcome early deficits to record a 14-9 victory in six innings in the second game.

Alex Bialik was the winning pitcher in the first game for the Sabers. Nick Doyle collected a triple, three singles and three RBIs.

In the second game, Mason Clark pitched five innings to take the win. He fanned nine batters. Doyle had a double, a triple and an RBI while Nathan Papes collected three hits.

“We came out a little rusty at first,” said Sabers coach Mike Kolanowski. “Alex threw strikes. He played a good game. Doyle led us at the plate.

“In the second game, Clark threw a great game when he came in. We were down 9-3 and put some runs on the board. Our defense started coming around a little bit more.”

MCC is 5-4-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Baldwin was the visiting team in the second game and started out with five runs in the first inning and four in the second and led 9-3 at one time before the Sabers rallied to get back in the game.

Brandon Avery was the losing pitcher in the first game. Avery and Devon Burrell both had a hit. Burrell had two RBIs.

Mike Thomas took the pitching loss.

“This was my first time pitching,” said Thomas. “The second game, we got focused.”

“Mike is only a sophomore,” Baldwin coach Doug Bolles said. “We just don’t have any arms. Avery couldn’t go any longer in the first game so I had to bring in Burrell. He was going to pitch game 2 and he wound up finishing game 2.”

Tyler Pelto had two hits with two RBIs while Thomas had a hit with two RBIs. Avery had a triple and RBI.

Baldwin, 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the league, is home Thursday against Onekama.

Baldwin lost 11-0 to Hesperia and 14-0 to White Cloud at the Hesperia Invitational on Saturday.
