Baldwin athlete has huge meet

BALDWIN — Flipstar Gymnastic’s Xcel Gold team and Baldwin athlete Kiela Brooks took third at the Oakland Classic Gymnastics Meet in Pontiac on Jan. 24.

“We had six girls travel across the state to compete in this meet,” coach Aimee Goff said. “They beat out many larger teams with their third-place finish with a score of 109.875, just 0.45 behind the first place team.”

Brooks was all-around champ with a score of 36.275, beating out teammate Julia Gutowski’s second-place all-around finish score of 36.275 by just one-tenth of a point in the same age group.

“In this same age division, Flipstar gymnasts also brought home the third, fourth and sixth-place all-around awards with Andrea Shoop bringing home third (36.05), Jessica Gutowski placing fourth (35.95) and McKenna Lake with the sixth-place medal (35.65),” Goff said. “We had many other podium finishes with Kiela also being the champion on vault (9.25) and floor exercise (9.525) as well as fifth on uneven bars (8.7). Julia was the champion on uneven bars (9.3) and runner-up on balance beam (9.4).

“I continue to be so proud of these girls. They made a great team as a team score is comprised of the top three scores on each event. Everyone of these six girls had two of their event scores count toward their team score so they all played an equal part in their third-place team finish. It is always fun to watch a smaller group like this beat out teams of close to twice their size.”

The next meet is a home fun event at Flipstar in Ludington on Saturday. The team will travel to Battle Creek to compete in the Cereal City Classic on Feb. 13-14.
