Baldwin Little League team wins opener at Scottville

BALDWIN  — Little League is taking off in Baldwin this month with two teams performing in the 11-to-15 year-old age bracket.

The two teams are coached by Bill Buckley, assisted by Lee Moore, Michael Mollohan, and Kelly Mollohan. The teams are referred to by the respective coach’s last name. Buckley’s team is called the Jays and Mollohan’s is called the Wildcats.

The Buckley team had a game at Scottville on Monday and came up with an 11-0 win. The Mollohan team had a home game set for June 11. On June 16, the Mollohan team will be in Custer and the Buckley squad will be home June 18. The Buckley team plays at Riverton on June 23 and the Mollohan squad is home on June 25. On days when the one team doesn’t play an opponent, it has practices.

“They played a good game,” Buckley said. “The boys are playing well.”

In Baldwin’s six-inning Monday win, Phil Jones and DeMarko Williams were the two pitchers.

“They pitched an awesome game,” Buckley said.

Derrick Hossler delivered a grand slam homer and Daniel McCarthy added a home run.

There are 22 teams in the travel league with 11 players on each one. Practices started in May. Officials noted that the number of players has doubled from a year ago.

“We had a successful year last year,” league rep Harold Nichols said. “That was our first year of building the new program. This year we’ve increase our enrollment by a third and were able to split our teams up to have two travel teams.”

Home games are at Hollister Park. The two teams scrimmage each other at 6 p.m. every Friday in June.

“We’ve got tournaments coming, either the last week of June or early July,” Buckley said.
