Group sets next hike for Saturday

BALDWIN — The Spirit of the Woods chapter of the North Country Trail Association had a May hike recently at the Upper Branch Bridge (Pere Marquette) River Access off Highway 10.

Joan Young led the group and talked about at least 11 different kinds of ferns in this early spring loop hike.

Chapter leader Loren Bach is from Irons and noted that many members and hike participants come from Lake County.

"We draw from all over," Bach said. "We draw from Mason, Lake and Manistee counties. People have cottages up there. Sometimes they'll be staying at their cottage and go on a hike with us."

National Trails Day is Saturday and the group will be at Silver Lake State Park with the Little Sable Lighthouse.

"We're going to coordinate with the Lighthouse Festival and national trails day and do an event that way," Bach said. "They have celebrations up and down the Lake Michigan coast. We'll have a short hike in the morning and a wander hike in the afternoon. In-between, they have tours of the lighthouse."

The Spirit of the Woods Chapter will also have a hike on Saturday, July 12, on the North Country Trail, which is a scenic area that runs on the northwest side of Hodenpyle Dam pond. It may be a longer day hike with a car shuttle or possibly doing the hike as an overnight hike. Contact Joan at (231) 757-2205 or email at to let her know if you are interested in the hike either overnight or day hike. The hike starting point will be announced later.
