Area residents getting ready for salmon run

BALDWIN — It’s not quite salmon run season yet, but Baldwin area merchants like Rick Delamater, of the Outdoor Inn and president of Lake County Sportsman Club are getting ready.

“There are a few salmon in the river according to some of the fishermen,” Delamater said late last week. “But they’re pretty spotty. It’s early yet. The water is low and clear.”

Traditionally, anglers start flocking into the area by mid-September as the salmon run takes off and runs into October.

Delamater recalls talking with U.S. Congressman William Huizenga from Hudsonville during a recent salmon run.

“He counted 12 license plates from 12 different states,” Delamater said. “We’ve had people from Germany, Poland, Japan...it’s kind of a secret in the state. A lot of them come and go.”

The salmon runs brings in business for local hotel owners and others and it’s one of the peak periods of the entire year, Delamater indicated.

Delamater is hopeful of making progress in securing property for sportsman club grounds from Pleasant Plains Township.

“It’s a huge draw for people to come into the area,” Delamater said. “We’ll get it done.”
