SHERIFF'S CORNER: Calls for Service, November 2022

As the Lake County Sheriff's Office used to be the police agency that people would normally work here for a limited amount of time and then eventually go work for another department, that has generally no longer been the case. While others have been struggling to maintain people or try to locate new employees, we are probably one of the only departments in the state that has a full roster for both road patrol, the jail and animal control. I attribute this to my excellent and professional command staff, maintaining a level of professionalism as well as having to let those go that were not suitable to wear the badge or lacked the skills, or did not have the high integrity needed to be a peace officer, or did not have the right demeanor when dealing with the public. Communities rely on the police for protection, and in turn, police rely on the public for support. One cannot work without the other. Police-community relations need to be one of trust and harmony to make a closer connection and safe community. Strong and trusted relations between community and police agencies are important to maintain society safe and protected. If there is no established relationship then that makes our job that much more difficult. It all starts with trust. So, Let's break down what trust is all about: T - Transparency R - Receptiveness U - Unity S - Service T - Training Transparency: To share your thoughts and opinions honestly and respectfully as well as an approach to communicating and forming relationships that emphasize being direct with people. Receptiveness: To be willing or inclined to receive suggestions, responsive to ideas, or impressions. Unity: The state or fact of being united or combined into one, as of the parts of a whole or the state of being one; oneness. Service: To supply with aid, information, or other incidental services or an act of help or assistance. Training: The process of bringing an employee to an agreed standard of proficiency by practice and instruction. These five things are essential to establish positive and effective community relationships as well as the community having faith in its law enforcement agency.
