LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Politically independent newspaper?

To the Editor:

I am reconsidering my subscription after reading the Jan. 5 edition and the article by Ed Haynor.

He might not be a political hack, but with 31 years as a member of the MEA, he certainly has an agenda.

Your paper touts itself as a... “politically independent newspaper.” Nice try.

Mark Hoekstra

Editor’s Response:

So, after publishing Ed Haynor’s response to a Jon Bumstead column printed in this newspaper, it would appear to Mr. Hoekstra that we need to try harder at being “politically independent.”

Well, Bumstead was elected in November of 2010.

His election was noted in the Nov. 3 edition of the Star.

Since that time, Rep. Bumstead has been mentioned or highlighted in the Star on: April 12, April 20, May 4, June 29, Aug. 10, Aug. 31, Sept. 21, Oct. 24, Nov. 8, Nov. 22, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 13, Dec. 28, 2011

Any material by Mr. Haynor has been published in this newspaper exactly ... er ... um ... once on Jan. 4, 2012 which was an opinion response to Bumstead column.

I proudly continue “touting” this newspaper as independent, and offer everyone - including Mr. Haynor - a voice.

I accept the “Nice try” comment as a compliment, and will continue trying.
