UPDATE: With the recent warm up, all Baldwin Sled Dog Derby events have been canceled.

Original story

BALDWIN — After being canceled in January due to lack of snow, organizers of the Sled Dog Derby hope the weather cooperates for the rescheduled date Friday in Baldwin.

The derby hosts sponsor teams with local businesses and organizations trying their hands at the rush of sled dog racing and spectators cheering for the fastest racer.

Currently, Shoey's Log Bar holds the trophy. The community will get to see if they can hold on to the trophy or if another team will claim it in 2023.

Along with the fun of winter recreation and competition, the event also is an opportunity to join in a good cause. People are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, or baby care item, for the Bread of Life Food Pantry or Grandmother's Cupboard Baby Pantry.

Participants meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday for a light meal at St. Ann Catholic Church Fellowship room, 1001 Michigan Ave. The races begin at 5 p.m. on the grounds between St. Ann Catholic Church and the Lake County Historical Museum. Awards will be announced, after, in the fellowship room.

The weekend continues with race events by the Great Lakes Dog Sled Association at Stearns Siding west of Baldwin on Wingelton Road.
