Willa M. Wood, 90, of Baldwin passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Willa was born in Grand Rapids on August 15, 1923 to Leo Schumaker and Edna Laws. She attended Coopersville High School and later moved to Rockford where she raised her family. She worked for Rockford Junior High School as well as Baldwin Schools. She retired to Baldwin in 1988 where she resided at Reed Lake. Willa is survived by her children Melvin (JoEllen) Empie of Cedar Springs, Linda Bassett of Grand Rapids, Shirlene (James) Clemons of Middleville, Russell Empie of Sarasota Florida, and Scott Empie of Fountain; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 10 great, great grandchildren as well as her sisters, Edith (Arthur) Zahm of Grand Rapids, Marilyn (Bob) Alberta of Wyoming, and Theresa (Ray) Borgman of Kalamazoo and one brother, Russell (Bonnie) Schumaker of Grand Rapids. Willa was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Miner Wood, her brothers Kenneth, Gordon, Raymond and Leo Schumaker, her sister Phyllis Kershner, sister-in-law Bonnie Schumaker and daughter-in-law Ardith Empie. Willa was a long-time member of Evergreen Church where she held several offices. She also was a member of R.S.V.P. and Council on Aging. She volunteered at Grand Oaks Nursing Home, the Tourist Center and the Chamber of Commerce. She was the “Volunteer of the Year” for Lake County in 1999.
