She was born in Beggs, Okla., to the proud parents of Donald and Ethel (Stephens) Hanson on Oct. 25, 1928. She was the second of five children. Verlean spent her early years in Oklahoma before she moved with her family to Gary, Ind. Eventually the family relocated to Baldwin in the early 1950s.

Verlean accepted the Lord in her life at an early age. She was an active member of Christ Community Church for a number of years before she moved her membership to Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church to be with her husband.
Verlean was an active member of the Lake County community. She was employed at Regional Health Care where she served as a home health aide. She was a hard worker who was very committed and focused. Verlean was very outgoing and extremely friendly. She never met a stranger and was loved by many.
