According to the news release, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is no longer allowing the Baldwin River Dam to be used to divert water into the old Baldwin Rearing Ponds for the Fishing Derby.
A DNR representative told the committee that out of safety and environmental concerns they cannot allow boards to be put in the dam to divert water. The dam structure is slated to be removed at some future point, they said.
The Troutarama Committee stated they were unable to come up with alternative arrangements for the Fishing Derby in time for this year’s festival, however, they will be exploring and listening to any ideas to bring back the Derby for future festivals.
Although the Fishing Derby is cancelled, there are still many events for kids during the Troutarama celebration, the news release said, including youth Games, the Fireman’s Penny Hunt, Little King and Queen’s Contest, Kiddie Parade, and Kid’s Kraft Corner.
In addition, Family Fun Tyme Amusements and Pixie’s Ponies will be on hand to provide fun for all.
