1926-2014

Solonia Lorraine Butler, 87, of Baldwin passed away on May 22, 2014 at Grand Oaks Nursing Center, surrounded by her family.

Solonia Lorraine Newbern was born November 28, 1926, in Lauderdale County, Tennessee to Peter and Jenevieve (Murray) Newbern. After graduating from Lauderdale County High School, she attended Jackson College, in Jackson, Tennessee.  She moved to Chicago, IL , and married Alexander Butler of Eufaula, Alabama.

Solonia moved her family to Baldwin in 1966 .She worked honorably for the Lake County Department of Social Services for 18 years; retiring in May 1989.

Solonia is survived by her  eight children, Stanley Butler, DeBriea Butler, Vanessa McPherson (Jerry), Sherna Porri (Hardings), Dion Butler, Floyd Butler, Brad Butler and Christopher James Butler; one brother, Benny Newbern, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Solonia is preceded in death by Alexander Butler (1982); her two children, Jeffery D. Butler (2008), and Brenda F. Cox (Terry) (2013); seven siblings - Eddie Sue, Sam, Willie, Beatrice, Zelma, Theodie, and Peter.

Services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, 3380 S. Yale Avenue, Baldwin, MI. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the Home-Going Celebration from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Grand Oaks Nursing Center in Baldwin.
