1933-2013

Robert N. Burns, aged 80 of Irons, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Robert was born on February 3, 1933 in Detroit to Harry and Charlotte (McKenzie) Burns, graduated from Detroit Cooley High School, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University, and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School.

He served his country with the United States Air Force, and on October 25, 1959, he married Shirley A. Lovelace in Detroit, and they celebrated 48 years together before Shirley preceded him in death on May 3, 2008. Robert served as Vice-President of Advance Mortgage Company in Detroit before moving to Irons in 1974 where he and Shirley operated the Big Bass Lake Store. He later started the Irons Real Estate office and helped develop many property associations around Irons. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially with his family in a variety of activities including fishing, hunting, and skiing. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially when his team was winning. Along with his wife Shirley, Robert was preceded in death by his son Tracy in 1960 and his parents.

Robert will be greatly missed by his sons, Dean (Leslie) Burns, Steven Burns, and Jim (Becki) Burns all of Irons; his grandchildren, Anna, Stuart, Samantha, and Chris; his brother, Richard A. Burns of Hudson, Florida; his business partner Kevin Walsh who was more like a brother; and his good friends, Bob and Linda Whaley of Big Pine, Fl.

A Service of Remembrance will be held for Robert at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 at the Stephens Funeral Home in Scottville. Graveside services will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Irons. Friends are invited to greet his family on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home, and at a luncheon at 2 p.m. at Skinner Park, to be held following the graveside services in Irons. Those who wish to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Mercy Hospice of Cadillac.
