OBITUARY: Ivan Ray Ives

Ivan Ray Ives

Ivan was the last of eight children born to John and Zilpha Ives in Marlborough,. (Marlborough, about two miles South of Baldwin, was a town that lived and died by the cement it produced in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s). Ivan’s oldest sister, Vivian, was given primary charge over him and named him from the book “Ivanhoe”.

His siblings: Vivian, Max, Luella, Vern, Phil, and Ralph preceded him in passing. He is survived by his brother, John.

If anyone from a poor family could have been spoiled during the Great Depression, it would have been Ivan. According to the tales of his older brothers, Ivan did not have to do as many chores and he never got his share of the whoopings.

After graduating from Baldwin High School in 1952, Ivan served this country four years in the United States Air Force.

In June of 1956, he married Nicolette (Niki) Durkee. They have four fantastic children: Mike, Beth, Jack, and Amee. They lived in Jenison until 1983 when they were divorced.

Ivan returned to his home town. He lived in the house that he and his brother, Phil built. Then, in 2004, Ivan married Charlene Stewart. He enjoyed excellent health and happiness with her. They traveled together with pleasure. They cruised to Alaska and Panama. They spent recent winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He enjoyed Charlene’s spoiling

Ivan enjoyed family vacations, like camping; bowling, playing cards, and canoeing (as long as he did not get wet), and traveling. His children and grand children were his pleasure and his pride.

Ivan saw all four of his children marry. Michael Ray of Corpus Christi, TX, married Adelle Domingez who has four children from a previous marriage. Elizabeth Ann of Wyoming, married Michael Notenbaum ; they have two daughters: Jessica Ann and Lisa Ann. John alan (Jack) of Eagle River, AK, married Joyce Nichols and they have two sons: Joseph Nichols and John Aaron. Amee Josephine of Bitely, MI. married Ed Wroblewski; they have two daughters: Rachel Joy and Hannah Rose.

Although Ivan’s simple successful life ended surprisingly soon (an apparent heart attack in his sleep), we are assured that because he made a proclamation to trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior that we, who believe likewise, will be rejoined with him in heaven.

Services for Ivan were Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at the Baldwin Assembly of God Church with Pastor Curt Richards officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to Verdun Funeral Home and Cremations Services of Baldwin (231) 745-4680.
