OBIT - Willie Carr

Mr. Willie Carr Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, June 8, 2011. He was born on August 14, 1937 to Willie Carr Sr. and Elsie L. (Hall) Carr. Both of his parents preceded him in death. He graduated from high school, and joined the U.S. Army on September 16, 1953. He received an honorable discharge on November 30, 1973. This was the result of him receiving his Retirement Certification from the Armed Forces of the United States of America. He served as a Staff Sergeant and received the Purple Heart Award. Among his decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations, and campaign ribbons awarded are: Vietnam C/C Unit Citation, 6 service stripes, 7 overseas service bars, Vietnam service medal, and Vietnam campaign medal w/60 DVC armed forces expeditionary medal.

He received the U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding service to the Nation, as a United States Army Soldier. He was recognized for his patriotism and continued support of the Army family. He also became a Life Member of the AMVETS and Veterans Service where he continued his active and enthusiastic support of the many programs in all areas.

After he served his country, he returned home, and married Ms. Vera Eastling in Baldwin, Michigan on December 8, 1984. He worked as a Driver for Dial-A-Ride in Lake County for many years. He also worked at the Evart Glass Company. He spent his free time networking with old friends, talking about old war stories, fishing, hunting, and bowling. He later joined the Idlewild/Faith Tabernacle Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Pastor Walter Lang in Muskegon Hts., Michigan where he served as a Deacon in 2003.

He leaves to mourn his memories, his wife for 25 years, Mrs. Vera Carr of Baldwin; 6 daughters, Jeanne Michele Carr, Jessie Carr, Lavera Ann (Larry) Pointer, and Charmaine Carr of Chicago, IL, Patricia Ann Jones of Baldwin, and Samantha N. Cobbs of Ludington; 2 sons, Credell Eastling of San Antonio, Texas and Darryle Edward Carr of Chicago, IL; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a special brother, Mr. Charles J. Postley of Blytheville, AK; 1 God-Daughter, Ms. Christian Lang of Big Rapids; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Willie will be Friday, June 17, at 12 noon with visitation at 11 a.m. until service time at Verdun Funeral Home.
