BALDWIN — Vibrant color will make a splash in downtown Baldwin in 2023, with five local artists coming together to highlight the beauty in the area with their paint brushes.

Artist Pam Simmons, former owner of the past Pamela Tripp Gallery in downtown Baldwin, began coordinating a mural project this past summer with her group the Lake County Artists Collective, and is working with the Village of Baldwin Downtown Development Authority to make this a reality.

Partnering with the Village of Baldwin DDA allows the artist group to ask for tax deductible donations to fund the project.

"In our travels, we've noticed that many towns have murals. Since there are a number of artists living in our community now, we thought, why not us," she said.

Prio to the project for Baldwin, Simmons noticed a mural in Fremont painted by artist Jane Stroschin created on individual panels, and looking online, she also saw Alpena has a mural program where artists choose their own themes and style. The Alpena program began as an artist-initiated project and was continued by the Alpena Downtown Development Authority.

"Taking ideas from other mural projects, our approach allows the artist's impression of the environment in which they live. Each artist will paint a 4' x 6' panel that will be hung in a series on the exterior wall of the Baldwin Business Center. The Lake-Osceola State Bank has graciously donated the space," Simmons said.

Each five artists will bring their own unique style to the project, from representational to abstract, all based on the natural world where they work and live, she added.

"We are hoping the mural will give people the joy of viewing art. Maybe through our surroundings, the viewer will take notice of the hidden beauty of Lake County. Maybe they will see something that went unnoticed before, or reinforce what they already love about Lake County," Simmons said.

Along with Simmons, the masterpieces also will be created by artists Lisa Boerema, Vicki Beyer, Eli Heckler and Sharon Woodward.

If anyone would like to support the project, please send a donation to Village of Baldwin DDA at PO Box 339 Baldwin, MI 49304. Make the checks out to Village of Baldwin DDA.
